Hanging a door so it latches

Door fitting is measuring the lining and hanging the leaf so the gaps are even and the latch or multi-point lock meets. That covers internal doors, front and back doors, FD30 sets, French doors, sliders and bi-folds in an opening that is already built. If the frame is rotten or out of square, the frame is replaced rather than a new leaf being forced into it.

  • ✓ Openings measured at head, middle and cill
  • ✓ Hinges, seals and closers to suit the door
  • ✓ Fire doors hung as a set, not a sticker
  • ✓ Floors covered and shavings cleared

Gaps you can see

A normal internal hang leaves about 2–3mm at the head and the sides, with a deeper undercut over carpet than over a hard floor. Fire doors follow the gap in their own instructions, which is tighter.

Fire doors as a set

A garage-to-house door or a flat door onto a stair needs the rated leaf, seals, hinges and closer together. A sticker on a hollow door is not that set.

Entrance doors that lock

Front and back doors are hung with the threshold seal and the multi-point lock lined up. A new slab on a rotten cill still draughts.

What we do

Doors we hang

Each service is a different specification. Open the one that matches the leaf: a room door, an entrance door, a fire-door set, a bi-fold, a French pair, a slider, a new frame, or a security front door.

Why choose us

What a fitting visit covers

Measure, then cut

Width and height are taken at the head, the middle and the cill. Older UK linings are often imperial and out of square, so a catalogue blank is trimmed to that frame rather than the other way round.

What moves the price

Internal labour in a sound frame is typically £70–£150 a door. Supply and fit of a standard internal door is often £150–£400. Entrance doors and FD30 sets cost more because of locks, seals and closers. A rotten frame, a solid oak leaf, or a carry up a tight stair adds time. The written quote uses your door and your opening.

DIY or a fitter

One internal door in a square lining is a fair DIY job if you can mortice a hinge. External doors, fire doors, bi-folds and crooked frames are where a bad hang shows every day. Putting a twisted frame right costs as much as hanging it once.

Jobs that are not this trade

We do not fit windows, up-and-over garage doors, electric gates or new lintels. A night lockout on a door that still hangs is a locksmith. We will not plane a certified fire door past the maker’s trim limit.

How we work

Measure, hang, check the latch

The same sequence on a single internal door or a run of them. Crooked frames and fire-door sets take longer because the tolerance is tighter.

01

Measure the opening

We check square, the floor build-up, and whether the frame is rotten. A fire door, a front door and a bedroom door are specified differently before any timber is cut.

02

Hang the leaf

Hinges are morticed, the door is trimmed for clearance, and an entrance or fire door gets its seals and closer in the same visit. Floors are covered while we work.

03

Latch, lock, leave

The keep or the multi-point hooks have to meet. We swing the door, clear the shavings, and an external opening is not left open overnight.

Door fitting answers

How much does door fitting cost?

Labour to hang an internal door in a frame that stays is typically £70–£150. A supplied and fitted standard internal door is often £150–£400. Entrance-door labour is often £150–£350, and a composite door supplied and fitted commonly starts around £900. An FD30 set supplied and fitted is often £250–£600. A new lining, an out-of-square opening, oak, or a long carry changes the figure. You get a written quote for your door, not a sticker that only says the job is quoted.

Why does a door stick or drop?

Sticking only in winter is a swollen lock edge. Dropping onto the latch is a loose top hinge or too little hinge for the weight. Catching a new carpet is an undercut. A bind on the diagonal is often the frame, especially where clay has moved. Hollow doors with a split skin are replaced. Solid doors are eased.

Can I hang a door myself?

A square internal lining and one standard leaf is a reasonable DIY job if you can cut a hinge mortice. Budget half a day the first time. External doors, fire doors, glazed or oak leaves, and frames that are out of square are fitter’s work. A fire door also has to keep the gap in its certificate.

What is not a door-fitting job?

Windows, electric gates, up-and-over garage doors and new structural lintels. A same-night lock change on a door that is fine is a locksmith. Skimming a whole room after a lining swap is a plasterer. We hang doors and replace frames.

How long does a hung door last?

A solid internal door can last for decades; hinges and latches wear first. Hollow-core doors are finished once the skin is holed. Bare end grain at an external cill rots upwards. Coastal plated hinges pit. Fire doors fail early if the seals are painted, the closer is wedged, or the leaf was trimmed past its allowance.

What should I do before you arrive?

If the leaf is solid timber, stand it in the room for a couple of days. Prime the top, bottom and edges before a painted door is hung. Clear a path from the door to where the van can stop, and tell us about stairs or a short lift. Do not plane a fire door while you wait.
