Common questions

How much does it cost to fit a door in the UK?

Hanging an internal door in a frame that stays is typically £70–£150 in labour. Supply and fit of a standard internal door is often £150–£400. External door labour is often £150–£350, with a composite entrance door supplied and fitted commonly from about £900. An FD30 fire-door set supplied and fitted is often £250–£600. A new lining adds more. The quote depends on the leaf, the frame, and access.

Can I hang an internal door myself?

Yes, if the lining is square and sound and you can mortice a hinge and set a latch. A first door often takes half a day. Leave external doors, fire doors, oak, glazed leaves and out-of-square frames to a fitter. A crooked hang has to be paid for twice.

Why does my door stick or drop?

Sticking only in winter is usually a swollen lock edge. Dropping onto the latch is loose hinge screws or too few hinges for the weight. Scraping after a new carpet is an undercut. A diagonal bind can be the frame moving, especially on clay. Hollow doors with a split skin are replaced; solid doors are eased.

What gap should a fire door have?

The certificate for that set decides. A typical FD30 gap is about 3mm at the head and the jambs, with a limited gap at the floor. A normal carpentry gap is not the same thing. Seals, rated hinges and a closer are part of the set. We do not trim a certified leaf past the maker’s allowance.

How long does a fitted door last?

A solid internal door can last for decades. Hinges, latches and seals wear first. Hollow-core doors are done once the skin is damaged. External timber rots from bare end grain at the cill. Coastal hinges pit if they are cheap plated steel. Fire doors stop performing when seals are painted, closers are wedged open, or the leaf has been cut down.

What will you not fit?

Windows, up-and-over garage doors, electric gates and new lintels. Lock-only emergencies on a sound door. Plastering a whole room. Planing a certified fire door outside its trim limit. We hang doors and replace frames.

Do you fit a door I have already bought?

Yes, if it is wide and tall enough to trim and the right thickness. A door that is already too small cannot be stretched. Measure the lining before you buy, at the head, the middle and the cill.

How do I get a price?

Use the quote form or WhatsApp and say which door, how many, whether the frame stays, and the town. You get a written quote from those details. There is no need to guess a catalogue price for a crooked opening.

Still need a price?

Describe the door and the town. If it might be a fire door, say whether it faces a garage, a stair, or a common landing.
